The Mulqueen’s of Doorus

“Doorus” (also written Dooras, Douras), is located near O’Callaghan’s Mills.

The Family Farm had been the family base for many generations the Family appearing in the Census of 1901 and 1911, the Griffith Valuation of 1855 and the Tithe Applotment Registers of 1826.

It appears the Family Lineage at Doorus may go something like this;

Andrew Mulqueeny (b. approx. 1770’s) appears in the Tithe Applotments Books 1826 for Doorus. Then possibly his son Daniel Mulqueeny.

Daniel Mulqueeny (b. approx. 1800) (married Bridget Kennelly), he appears in the Griffith Valuation for Doorus in 1855. Daniel’s sons (we assume) would be Andrew Mulqueeny (b.1831?) and Michael Mulqueeny (likely born in the 1830’s), they both appear in the Irish Census for Doorus in 1901 & 1911.

(Details listed in the 1901 Census suggests Michael’s birth as 1840 which cannot be correct {more likely mid 1830s}, whilst the 1911 Census it suggests as early as 1827 also incorrect).

It seems Daniel also had three or maybe four daughters: Bridget (b 1837, d 1839), Bridget (b 1840), Margaret (b 1844) and possibly Johanna (b 1840s).

Note: There were other Mulqueeny Families living in the general Doorus locality in the 1840’s and we expect they were closely related – Thomas Mulqueeny b. 21/12/1831, d. USA on Jan. 11 1917 (his father was Michael Mulqueeny and his mother Anne {nee Cooney} Mulqueeny, I suspect this Michael could be a brother to Daniel Mulqueen m. Bridget Kennelly). Thomas moved to America, changed his name to Thomas Mulquin and died in 1917 at Effingham Illinois, USA. Thomas had 4 Children Thomas Mulquin, Rebecca Flood, Joseph Mulquin, Catherine Mulquin. – According to his death notice he had a sister Catherine Mulqueeny (born in the 1830’s in Co. Clare Ireland). This Catherine apparently came to Sydney in 1854 to join her sister Margaret (1830-1889, who had already made her way to Australia) Margaret married Martin Kennedy in Sydney 1854). Catherine (She married James White on 13/1/1870) then moved and settled in Memphis USA in 1873, like her brother she adopted the spelling Mulquine instead of Mulqueeny when referring to her Maiden Name). She had 5 Children – William White, Anne White, Nellie (Moore), James White and Letitia (Angel).

INFORMATION from the 1901 Irish Census for Doorus

(You will notice by now the ‘Y’ is gone from Mulqueeny)

By 1901 it Appears there are now just 2 Mulqueen families living at DOORUS.

We suspect they are sons of Daniel Mulqueeny (b. approx. 1800) who was married to Bridget (nee Kennelly)

FAMILY ONE (Living at this Residence as at Census Time)

(Andrew was Married to Bridget Ryan – she died approx. 1890)

  1. Michael (SON); 36 years (therefore born about 1865)
(This Michael we assume is a 1st cousin to the Michael Mulqueen who came to Australia in 1891)
(It is possible he married Johanna (nee ????) and had 2 children; Bridget b. 1908, Kate b. 1910)
  2. Anne (DAUGHTER) 25 years therefore born about 1876
    Anne was actually born 30/6/1867.

FAMILY TWO Living in a home described as having Stone walls, Thatched Roof, 3 Windows in front & 3 Rooms.

  1. MICHAEL 60 Years (FATHER) (We assume a brother to Andrew (Above) and Son of Daniel Mulqueeny.)
  2. CATHERINE 50 years (nee Lynch) (MOTHER)
(Note: Given they were Married in 1860 her listed age on the Census of 50 years cannot be correct as she was married in 1860 and it is more likely she was born around the early 1840s.)

Parish Records have their Marriage as 14/2/1860.
(originally, they had 12 Children in total, these listed are still at the home at the 1901 Census).

THE CHILDREN LISTED ON THE CENSUS 1901

  6. Margaret (Daughter) Aged 18 (Assume left for Australia after the 1901 Census with Andrew) (Later married John Michael Davern in Kyneton, Victoria, Australia)

At the time of the 1901 Census Children – Michael, John and Catherine had already emigrated to Australia in 1891 so they were not included in 1901 Census. Bridget remained single. And 3 of the original 12 Children died at a young age – Daniel, Anne, and Peter.
